Scallop Fun For the Family!

Scallops are found in sea grass beds along Florida's west and northwest coast primarily along the St. Johns Bay, Suwannee and Weeki Wachee Rivers. Scallops are making a come back after a decline in population. Scalloping has regulations as to the amount you may collect; a Current Florida Saltwater Fishing License is needed to collect scallops. Open season is July 1st thru September 10th.

Equipment Needed: a boat is usually needed to get the best of scalloping areas, although wading for scallops in sea grass is possible just not always productive. Anchoring in 4-10 feet of water and snorkeling over the beds, collection the scallops by hand, you need a mask, snorkel fins, and a small mesh bag. Make sure you put out the Diver Down flag in the water while in diving swimmers must also have a tethered buoyed 12x12 dive flag attached to there person, same is also needed if a person is snorkeling from the beach if not in a marked swimmers area.
